The ruby-throated hummingbirds are back for the summer. With a combination of the right plants and feeders you can attract more of these beautiful birds to your yard and garden. Hummingbirds are attracted to annuals like petunias, fuchsia, salvia and lavender. Perennials such as bee balm, columbine, coral bells and beardtongue are also great attractors or try perennials vines like trumpet vine or honeysuckle ‘Dropmore Scarlet’.
Hummingbirds are after nectar and Sargent’s has a huge selection of feeders that are both decorative and functional. Buy packaged nectar or make your own using 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. No artificial sweeteners or food coloring please. Combine, heat and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Be sure to cool before filling your feeders. Sargent’s also has ant moats and bee guards for a variety of feeders.
Hummingbirds will also visit your bird bath. Add rocks to the bottom so that they water is only 1.5″ deep to encourage the birds to stop for a sip.
