Pollinators do a lot of quiet work in our gardens, and Pollinator Week is a good reminder to return the favor by learning more about what you can do to help them survive. Here’s how to make the most of pollinator week this year.
Shop native.
Our perennial section is bigger than ever this season, with native plants ready to go in the ground. As you browse, keep an eye out for the blue dot — that’s how we mark our Minnesota Natives, the hyper-regional species that evolved right here in our prairies, woodlands, and wetlands. They’re the backbone of a strong pollinator garden, and if you’re working through a Lawns to Legumes grant, the blue dot is also your shopping guide: those are the plants that qualify for reimbursement. Learn more about the categories here.
Walk the garden.
Stop by our native plant demonstration garden just east of the parking lot. Seeing a plant in a pot tells you one thing; seeing it settled into a garden, doing its job, tells you everything. This is the place to picture what your own beds could become.
Talk to Sarah.
Perennial manager Sarah Blue is our resident native plant expert, and she’s in on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Whether you’re starting from scratch, hunting for something specific, or just full of questions, she’s happy to dig in — and can special order when she’s able.
Take the Less Lawn More Life quiz.
This outside project is worth five minutes of your time. Answer a few questions, get plant recommendations tailored to your property, then shop your picks here at Sargent’s. Snap a few photos as things fill in and tag us @sargentsnursery and them @lesslawn. Every patch of lawn turned back into habitat counts.
