Feeding and watching the birds is fun and educational for the entire family. Winter birds in our area include blue jays, cardinals, chickadees, nuthatches, juncos, woodpeckers just to name a few.   This time of year, birds need food and water plus cover to protect them from the elements and predators.  Place bird feeders near trees and shrubs to attract the most birds, but be sure to keep them at least 10-15 feet away to prevent squirrels from jumping on and cleaning out your feeders.

A heated bird bath top is the best way to provide a source of water for the birds to drink and bathe in.  Having this water will help bring in the largest variety of birds.  Different birds prefer different types of feeders and seed.  Add a suet feeder for woodpeckers, nuthatches and chickadees.  Platform feeders are great for cardinals and blue jays and tube feeders for either finch feed or mix seed bring in a large number of birds as well.
